Translating songs into Dovahzul is something that’s commonly asked about, so I figured I’d put together a guide. It’s certainly a daunting task. There’s no magical secret to make it easy. Hopefully, though, some of the tips and suggestions here will help you on any song you wish to translate.

So often it’s tempting to do a literal translation word by word. This will most likely give you lyrics that don’t rhyme and don’t fit the rhythm. The silver lining to this is that it makes us consider different ways of phrasing the lyrics, which is ultimately a good thing because we want to write the lyrics in a way that will make sense in our target language (in our case, the ancient language of the dragons).

Below we’ll use “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen as an example.

Here’s an excerpt from the song’s opening stanzas:

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation,
And it looks like I’m the queen.
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I tried
Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know

Kolos zu’u aal kos jud

It is still, untouched
A kingdom all by itself
In which I might be queen.

We get some nice internal rhyming with kinzon and vulon as well as junaar and nimaar, and kolos and kos. Finding a rhyme for jud was a challenge, so that shaped the second line to use vohaalvut. Other options were gut (far) and horvut (lure).

Fin ven dreh rein med daar rahgol strun kosill
Nis dein nii ko, unt voth pah sil
The wind does roar like this raging storm within.

The lack of a word for “inside” led me to look for a synonym in kosill (inner, within). Unt (try) doesn’t rhyme with kosill, so I changed the phrasing to use sil (soul) while keeping unt and eliminating the English idiom “heaven knows”.

This was one of the more difficult stanzas, without words for “let”, “conceal”, or “feel”. Ultimately the first line relies a lot on metaphor and context to get across “Don’t let them see who you are”. We can get a nice literal translation of the second line. “Steel and freeze” is used to mean “steel yourself against the world”, “freeze” meaning along the lines of turning a cold shoulder.

And now, to the chorus:

You did great! I think you did the bridge right before the last chorus much better than I did. My only remark would be these two lines:

I want to know all (of) my magic,
Give blessing and unleash my wrath,

I'm not sure "wrath" fits the character of the song, but that's a pretty minor nitpick.
