Translating songs into Dovahzul is something that’s commonly asked about, so I figured I’d put together a guide. It’s certainly a daunting task. There’s no magical secret to make it easy. Hopefully, though, some of the tips and suggestions here will help you on any song you wish to translate.
So often it’s tempting to do a literal translation word by word. This will most likely give you lyrics that don’t rhyme and don’t fit the rhythm. The silver lining to this is that it makes us consider different ways of phrasing the lyrics, which is ultimately a good thing because we want to write the lyrics in a way that will make sense in our target language (in our case, the ancient language of the dragons).
Below we’ll use “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen as an example.
Here’s an excerpt from the song’s opening stanzas:
The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation,
And it looks like I’m the queen. The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I triedDon’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
Well, now they knowLet it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the doorI don’t care
What they’re going to say
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway
Before we go into the dragon language, let’s take a look at the song’s translation in a real-world language. How about German?
Here’s a literal translation I’ve made of these lyrics:
The snow shines white on the mountains tonight
Not a trace to be seen.
A lonely kingdom
And I am the queen. The wind, it howls like the storm completely deep inside me.
To control myself, I have tried.Don’t let them in! Don’t let them see
How you are. No! This must never happen.
You must not feel, don’t show them
Your true self!I’m letting go, letting go now
This power, it is boundless.
I’m letting go, letting go now
And I’m blowing the door shut.It is time, now I’m ready!
And a storm is coming.
The cold, it is now a part of me.
I’m far from fluent in German, so apologies for any mistakes! Hopefully the idea gets across all the same. Compare these lyrics to the original – you’ll notice there are some places where they’re fairly close, and others where they’re quite different! When translating, you'll need to find new ways to phrase the lyrics in order to keep rhyme and rhythm.
