The Labrynth

Drem Yol Lok! I am just getting started here and I have been enjoying the Labrynth text adventure game, as it's really good for learning basic words. A more game-oriented question I have is how do shields work? I have not seen any option to use them (bash, block), and no mentions of them have shown up in the battle dialogue. I can only assume it bonuses the armor rating of my charater, but that is mere speculation. Any help would me much appreciated!

Edit: Well I'm quite the mey, it is a direct boost to armor points.
