List of Needed Words

 1  2 > >>

April 5, 2013

I made up a list of various words we need and still don't have, yet. I'm not finished yet (it's rather small, for now), there's many more categories I'll be adding, but I figured I would post this, for now, and then edit my post later to update it. (I'll also try and cross words out, regularly, as they are added.)

The words are organized first by category, then alphabetically. If there are similar words we have already, I have mentioned them in parenthesis next to the needed word.

I hope this is helpful for, at least, some of you!

Categories (so far)

  • Food and Drink

I was curious if we were actually doing curse words or not. I guess now I know.

Yes!  Some might be borrowed literally ("damn", "bastard"), others probably not ("hell", "fuck").  Get creative with your curses!

Speaking of needed words, where are the weekly "we need these" lists posted, on the home page?

Yup!  They called "The Jarl's Bounty", and I'll be putting another one up sometime today.

Can I suggest that the entry for "cow" (Boz) be altered to Bez (like Rek, she), and then "bull" can be Boz (like Rok, he). Or, better yet, make no descrimination between the two. I'd be ok with Boz being the cover-all word for cattle/cow/bull, since the derived word Bos means all three.

I would vote to keep "Boz" as a general, non-gender-specific term.  How about "Bozk" or "Bosk" for "bull"?

If you like. I'm not sure a dragon would distinguish between cow/generic cattle, but bulls may stand out to them, if only because at certain times of the year bull meat tastes kind of rank and I imagine if dragons eat (do they eat??) they would know this well. heh.

That is, if we're concerned about dragon culture... :)

Which we certainly are!  The obvious difference is gender.  Dragons are genderless but certainly understand the concept since they have feminine/masculine pronouns.  So "Boz" is "cow/cattle" and "Bozk/Bosk" is "bull"?

Question regarding calendar month and day names (I was thinking of making a bounty list from them):  Do you think the dragons/ancient nords would have called the days/months the same or had a different calendar?  There's not really much in the lore/history that states when the Tamrielic calendar was founded or by whom.

Not at all. What are months to a dragon? Days are a blink of an eye.... Dragons are essentially time itself right?, so I don't think the conception of time would be anything similar to that of mortals. They would likely have (and I didn't check) generic word for things like "moment" (wait a moment), they have a word for "eternity"... Anyway, something to think about. Become the dragon. Understand Tiid as Dov do..... ;D

Remember too that the language was spoken by nords, and they would need words for the months and days of the week.  I mean, they could not have words for these, but I imagine it would become quite an inconvenience.
