Dovahzul Flag Contest

August 1, 2015

Back in December, community member hiith sparked a discussion that has since enveloped much of the site. The premise was this - design a flag or symbol to represent Dovahzul and its community. After much discussion, we are opening this little project to the community large.

Help us design a community flag, and your design might be used here on the site or in future learning material. Once the entries are in, a select group will be put to a community vote. The number of eligible entries will depend on the total we receive. One or several rounds of voting will determine the winning design.

You don’t have to be a member of Thuum.org to submit, but members who submit a design that makes it the vote will receive 60 gold. You will need a Thuum.org membership to vote for a flag.

Contest Entry Guidelines

For each design, please submit the following as either a JPG or PNG. Vector images are not required but would be helpful:

  • 1000x600 rectangular variant
  • 600x600 square variant

An ideal design will be able to accomodate the shapes above. You don't need to use the entire area for your design - the sizes listed are mostly to help standardize the entries.

Consider the following when thinking about your flag design:

  • Use simple colors. A flag should be easy to recognize and reproduce. Avoid glows, gradients, or raster elements (such as a screenshot of a dragon) that would be impossible to produce by hand.
  • Design for large and small sizes. A flag should be distinctive even from far away. A successful design will be vector-friendly and won't lose detail at small sizes.
  • Accomodate for grayscale. Your design may be featured in learning material or printouts without color capability. A successful design will still be recognizable in grayscale, even better if there is a black-and-white variant of it.

Below is a list of design elements to avoid, and which may disqualify an entry:

  • No glows, gradients, bevels, or drop shadows
  • No complex images
  • No text (a variant may feature text, but the design shouldn't rely upon it)

Send your entry in an email to [email protected] with the subject line: Dovahzul Flag Contest.  Please provide the two flag images described above and the username, name, blog, or URL you would like to have listed as the credit.

This contest will be open for entries until Friday, August 28th. If you have any questions or feedback on the format of this contest, don't hesitate to post in the comments. Pruzah wahl!

Is there a maximum number of entries?

Let's say a maximum of 3 entries. Separate entries should be distinct. For example, don't submit 3 flags that are all variations of each other.

A quick comment based on some recent submissions, I'd recommend that you avoid directly using the Skyrim logo or other designs from the game. These are too intricate to be practical on a flag, and would create potential legal issues if we ever want to use the flag on, say, buttons or t-shirts.

If using design elements from the game (for example, dragon runes), see if you can simplify them for use in a flag, and on the same token, modify them enough to be distinct from Bethesda's work.

How do you make them on the computer? I'm not much of a computer whiz. Or can I make one by hand and download it?
